Why DTF on a polo is the right call when the logo has gradients and the order is 50 units

Embroidery on a polo left-chest is the default for a Limassol bank's relationship managers — but when the brief includes a multi-colour logo with a gradient and a 50-unit minimum, embroidery cannot reproduce the tone variation. Screen printing on piqué loses detail in the mesh texture and per-colour setup adds €140 at low volume. DTF prints the full-colour artwork in one pass at 160°C on a 200 gsm cotton-poly piqué polo, sits flush over the piqué loops, and survives 40+ washes. Total cost on a 100-quantity run: €8.20 per polo with a single-position chest-left DTF print.

Models and materials that work with DTF on a polo

The working grade is 100% cotton piqué at 200 gsm (Gildan 3800, B&C Perfect 100, Sol's Summer II). For a heavier corporate look, 220 gsm 100% ringspun cotton piqué (Continental N22, Stanley/Stella Prepster) holds the print more cleanly over the piqué loops. Performance polos in 100% polyester with moisture-wicking finish need 165°C and a 70-second dwell for proper adhesive bond. Long-sleeve polos work the same as short-sleeve. Print placements: chest-left (100×100 mm corporate mark), chest-centre (200×250 mm small illustration), sleeve (80×80 mm), back yoke (60×250 mm). Avoid the placket buttons — heat near the buttons softens polyester-resin buttons and the press cannot reach the fabric cleanly.

Print specifics: film, ink stack, and finish on piqué

Standard production: 0.08 mm PET film, CMYK+W ink stack with optional metallic gold/silver at +€0.50 per unit, hot-melt polyurethane adhesive powder. Cure at 110°C for 90 seconds, then heat-press at 160°C / 60s (165°C / 70s for 100% polyester), medium pressure, peel cold. White underbase density is calibrated to the polo colour: 35 micron on white, 70 micron on pastel, 110 micron on black and navy. The piqué texture shows through slightly under the print — this is intentional and matches the polo's woven character. For best wash durability we add a post-press at 160°C / 8 seconds. The finished print survives 40+ machine-wash cycles at 30°C with mild detergent.

Bundling and packaging

Polos ship folded in 280×360 mm poly mailers (€0.20 per mailer uplift) or in a kraft gift box with tissue interleave for VIP client-handover tiers (€1.20 per box uplift). Bulk deliveries to a Limassol office go in master cartons of 25 polos each. Each parcel carries a 60×90 mm care card. For retail sale we add a branded belly band hanger and a 10×150 mm size strip on the collar. Choose DTF for hero artwork, embroidery for corporate brand marks.

Can DTF print on a 100% polyester performance polo?

Yes — performance polyester needs a slightly higher cure (165°C) and longer dwell (70 seconds) to seat the adhesive into the synthetic fibre. We always test the adhesive bond on a sample pull before production.

Can the print survive 40+ washes on a 200 gsm piqué polo?

Yes — DTF survives 40+ machine-wash cycles at 30°C with mild detergent. We recommend cold wash inside-out, no bleach, no fabric softener, hang dry. The post-press at 160°C / 8 seconds re-seats the adhesive into the piqué loops for longest life.

Can each polo carry a unique name?

Yes — variable-data printing is included up to 50 unique names. Above 50 we charge €0.30 per unique name after the first 50. Lead time adds 1 business day for variable-data layout.

Does the print make the polo less breathable?

No — the print is 0.15 mm thick and the adhesive layer is micro-perforated during the heat-press, so the cotton fibre breathes normally under the print area. There is no heat trap, no sweating on the chest.
